Trench is TØP 5th studio album. 2 years since Blurryface and what did they create whilst on hiatus?
Well, Trench has the same story-telling narrative to Blurryface but there are obvious differences.
Heavydirtysoul, TØP last MV before their hiatus
The sound is is more refined and polished. Joseph's vocals have greatly improved, Josh Dun can deliver impressive drumming interludes and you can definitely tell that they have matured and mastered their craft.
Jumpsuit is the lead track/single to the album and gives listeners a taste of how the album will sound.
Its heavy and gritty opening instantly pulls you in and its accompanying music video signifies the end of the Blurryface era. It follows a new lore with a different setting and a tied to new theories.
Lyrically, it speaks about depression and needing a jumpsuit to feel lifted and protected "jumpsuit, jumpsuit cover me". Asides from Jumpsuit, other tracks like Nino and The Niners, Levitate and Bandito are linked, lyrically and theoretically to the universe set in 'Dema'.
Within the album other standout tracks include My Blood (due to its elements of dance pop and electronica) Chlorine (for its sheer catchiness yet characteristically) sound Twenty One Pilots is known for and Smithereens because of its simplistic but effective composition.
Are there songs that SHOULD be skipped over. No, but everyone has different musical tastes as Tyler Joseph says "Because a kitchen sink to you, Is not a kitchen sink to me, okay, friend?" However, there are some numbers which will take more time to appreciate and enjoy.
Trench is an album with an eclectic mix from indie to electronica without being overwhelmingly so and is worthwhile listening to not just "the few, the proud and the emotional".
