Lorde (real name: Ella Marija Lani Yelich-O'Connor )is a New Zealand singer who broke into the music industry with her debut single Royals (it won song of the year and best pop solo at the 2014 Grammy Awards).

Lorde's debut album in 2013 (Pure Heroine) was well received as it was for its song writing and production. She has stated that Melodrama is a sonically different to her previous album due to the changes in her life.

Melodrama (a sensational dramatic piece with exaggerated characters and exciting events intended to appeal to the emotions) opens up with Green Light ( a track I admit to have listen to before) and it's the perfect introduction to the album. What's a recurring occurrence is the way Lorde approaches song. The stories told in Melodrama are painted so clearly and gives you a glance of Lorde's personal struggles with the end of her relationship and heartbreak.

Tracks like Liability and Hard Feelings/Loveless are deep cuts due to the rawness of Lorde's struggles with feeling unwanted.

They say, "You're a little much for me
You're a liability
You're a little much for me"
So they pull back, make other plans
I understand, I'm a liability
Get you wild, make you leave
I'm a little much for e-a-na-na-na, everyone

Other songs that stood out to me included Sober and Homemade Dynamite. Her approach to song writing puts a real emphasis on the pre-chorus as they create the perfect lead up to the chorus. Though I enjoy the whole album from beginning to end there were some songs (The Louvre, Writer In The Dark) which needs more relistens to grow.

Coming back to this album almost 4 years since its release. Melodrama has stood the test of time and showcases how it's possible to tell stories in an album and not just depend on the singles for success.
