Apart from the blog title, did you actually know that today's the day that the Recording Academy will announce the nominations for the upcoming 63 Grammy Awards? If all goes to plan, they'll (hopefully) take place on the 31st January 2021.
It might surprise you or not but the Grammy's having going on strong since 1959... 61 years later and have they retained their significance and prestige in the music industry? Well that really does depend on your own opinion. I tend to be on the fence when it comes to the Grammy's and you can just look at the viewerships for the ceremony to see that they're hmm.... in a bit of a decline.
Last years Grammy Awards hit a 12-year low in viewership, with only 18.7 million people tuning in to watch Sunday’s broadcast.
That's not to say they're a sinking ship but I believe that the viewership is impacted by three main factors.
1) the nominees
2) the performer and performances
3) Time Zone differences
Allow me to explain...
So imagine that you're a music fan and you're waiting for the nominees to come out and see if your favourite releases and artists are in the list of nominees. If they're are congrats, but if not and there's an overwhelming difference in your picks and the official nominations, will you honestly tell me that you shall watch the ceremony if none of your artists have been nominated?
The performances on the award night itself can make a difference too, if you include the trending and exciting live performers it should mean higher viewer ratings. BUT. If the performances are plagued with constant technical difficulties then even the greatest artist will not be able to shine as they would normally do.
Lastly, time zones I think are slightly overlooked, it might just be me but I struggle with time zones (I am just now getting used to PT/ET time zone conversion) If the awards are occurring at 7PM in the US, my European/UK location means I always tend to lose precious sleep, not the most convenient thing but sometimes sacrifices have to be made.
I could also get into the constant controversies that the Recording Academy has gotten into particularly in the past such as, accusations of vote rigging, music snubs and the discrimination/racism and the list goes on. Even Eminem has his opinion and with 15 Grammys to his name maybe he's onto something 🤷🏻♀️.
So, what are my 2021 GRAMMY NOMINATIONS/OPINIONS?
Going through various entertainment and music predictions lists I have an inkling that Taylor Swift Lady Gaga, DUA LIPA, The Weeknd shall do well but we'll see won't we?
I'll shall updated the new portion of this blog as the nominees come in and if you want to watch the live stream too it shall happen TODAY 24 NOVEMBER 2020 AT 9.AM PT/12ET at the Grammys official website: https://www.grammy.com/
